The South Redford School District Board of Education passed a resolution at the regular meeting of Monday, November 9, 2009. The resolution adopted the Facility Use Policy and Rules and Regulations for Licensees and Users. This allows the District to rent campus facilities and athletic complex areas to the public. Board members hope the Performing Arts Center will draw community organizations, clubs, and groups in need of a facility for a performance or meeting. Campus facilities are available for rental under the stipulation the use will not interfere with school programs and are not dangerous or detrimental to public welfare.
Due to the Board Workshop of Monday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. the Thurston Honors Band Fundraiser scheduled for November 16, at Leo’s Coney Island , located at 28511 Schoolcraft has been rescheduled for Tuesday, December 1, 5:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. The Band will earn 10% of all sales and 100% of all tips earned at the fundraiser on December 1, 2009. Please mark your calendar to attend this event.

A charter bus with approximately 40 parents, staff and community members traveled to Lansing Tuesday, November 10, to represent South Redford School District. The purpose of the trip was to join other school Districts from around the state and ask legislators to save our schools. The recent cuts to education by the legislature will cost South Redford School District South Redford and other districts throughout the state will be forced to make cuts in programs and services mid-year.

On Saturday, November 7, 2009 the Thurston High School Eagle Marching Band performed at the Michigan Competing Band Association State Championship contest held at Ford Field in Detroit Michigan
Over 100 parents, community members and educators attended Dr. David Walsh’s presentation on Saturday, October 17, held at Thurston High School Auditorium. Dr. Walsh is a renowned author of nine books, founder and president of the National Institute on Media and the Family. Dr. Walsh presented strategies for parents to meet the challenges of raising children in our modern world highlighted from book No: Why Kids -of All Ages- Need to Hear it and Ways Parents Can Say It. Congratulations to Vandenberg Elementary of South Redford School District on receiving the 2009 Team Nutrition Grant and the Michigan Team Nutrition Training Grant. The purpose of the grant is to expand and enhance training programs that incorporate and implement the 2005 Dietary Guidelines American (DGQ) and USDA Foods in meals served under child nutrition program. The grant recipients were invited to participate in the Kick-Off to School Health Summit at Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.
